In 2000, Simon was named The Observer Outdoor Photographer of the Year, and he has travelled extensively in Europe, Asia, China, America and Africa, photographing people, places and mountains for The Lightbox Picture Library, which contains over 5,000 images from locations all over the world.

Simon is currently working on a large-scale project documenting the architecture of former communist countries of Eastern Europe which formed part of the Soviet Union and other communist countries. To date, he has visited Berlin, Bratislava in Slovakia, Prague in Czech Republic, Riga in Latvia, Tallinn in Estonia, and Sarajevo and Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, part of the former Yugoslavia. Still to come are Moscow in Russia, Budapest in Hungary, Krakow and Warsaw in Poland, and Ljubljiana in Slovenia. Simon Kirwan has just completed photographing the 11th World Airline Route Development Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark for Routes, the event organisers. The event took place over four days, and involved over 1700 international delegates and over 300 airlines from all over the world in attendance. During the event, we produced over 3000 images, which were being despatched to recipients all over the world during the event itself, and supplied prints on-site. The Lightbox Picture Library contains a comprehensive archive of architectural and aerial stock images shot in and around Liverpool and Merseyside. Pictures include the famous Metropolitan and Anglican Cathedrals, Beetham Tower, St Johns Beacon, Lime Street Station, Pier Head, Superlambanana, Princes Dock, the Liver Building, the Port of Liverpool Building and the Cunard Building, collectively known as the Three Graces. Along with the Albert Dock, these buildings form the centrepiece of the Liverpool Waterfront, which has been proposed as a World Heritage Site. Simon Kirwan is the official photographer documenting the new Marine Parade Bridge in Southport, constructed by Balfour Beatty in partnership with Sefton Council.

As well as commissioned work for corporate and advertising clients, Simon has been commissioned to produce aerial and landscape photography for a series of books to be published in May 2005, and has also produced photography for the 2004 Merseyside Police Charity Calendar. Simon Kirwan is equally at home in corporate offices, on a construction site, in a light aircraft, on a mountain summit, at a live music venue, or at sport stadium, and utilises state-of-the-art digital equipment to produce high-resolution images, which can be downloaded from camera to laptop computer, and written to CD-ROM on site, enabling the client to take the finished job immediately.
